that accumulate on the face and body. we produce millions of new skin
cells every day, just as we shed millions of dead skin cells every day.
when skin is young and healthy, it takes about 4 weeks for new cells to
reach the surface layer, thus every month, skin is renewed. as we age,
that cell turnover gradually slows. it can take twice as long or more
for those fresh cells to reach the surface.
additionally, the skin sheds its dead cells unevenly, leading to a dull,
splotchy, ashy appearance. exfoliating is a technique where the layer
of mostly dead epidermal cells on the outer surface of the skin (stratum
corneum) is removed to expose fresher mostly living cells.
